Hornisgrinde Telecommunications Tower was built between 1971-1972 for Südwestfunk (SWF), a German radio & television station with its head-office in Baden-Baden, and which was the state broadcaster from 1946 until 1998. After mergers in 1998, SWF became Süddeutsche Rundfunk (SDR).

The telecommunications tower is located on the Hornisgrinde, the highest mountain of the Northern Black Forest, at an altitude of 1,125 meters (3,690') above sea level, and 206 meters (676') above ground... for perspective, that's about the same height as a building with 48 floors.
